Science is involved in cooking, eating, breathing, driving, playing, etc. The fabric we wear, the brush and paste we use, the shampoo, the talcum powder, the oil we apply, everything is the consequence of advancement of science. Life is unimaginable without all this, as it has become a necessity.

His most important contribution to science was the mathematical theory of evolution which combined the evolutionary process defined by Darwin and the science of genetics founded by Mendel. Haldane moved from London to live and work in India in 1957.
Scientific knowledge allows us to develop new technologies, solve practical problems, and make informed decisions — both individually and collectively. Because its products are so useful, the process of science is intertwined with those applications: New scientific knowledge may lead to new applications.
Science is the greatest collective endeavor. It contributes to ensuring a longer and healthier life, monitors our health, provides medicine to cure our diseases, alleviates aches and pains, helps us to provide water for our basic needs – including our food, provides energy and makes life more fun, including sports, music, entertainment and the latest communication technology. Last but not least, it nourishes our spirit.
Science generates solutions for everyday life and helps us to answer the great mysteries of the universe. In other words, science is one of the most important channels of knowledge. It has a specific role, as well as a variety of functions for the benefit of our society: creating new knowledge, improving education, and increasing the quality of our lives.
Science must respond to societal needs and global challenges. Public understanding and engagement with science, and citizen participation including through the popularization of science are essential to equip citizens to make informed personal and professional choices.
Governments need to make decisions based on quality scientific information on issues such as health and agriculture, and parliaments need to legislate on societal issues which necessitate the latest scientific knowledge. National governments need to understand the science behind major global challenges such as climate change, ocean health, biodiversity loss and freshwater security.
To face sustainable development challenges, governments and citizens alike must understand the language of science and must become scientifically literate. On the other hand, scientists must understand the problems policy-makers face and endeavor to make the results of their research relevant and comprehensible to society.
Challenges today cut across the traditional boundaries of disciplines and stretch across the lifecycle of innovation -- from research to knowledge development and its application. Science, technology and innovation must drive our pursuit of more equitable and sustainable development.
Even a few hundred year ago, the condition of man roaming in the world at the mercy of the mighty forces of Nature, was miserable, if not pitiable. He had to suffer from the vagaries of weather and the far greater attack of diseases.
When he went on a long journey, he usually despaired of returning in safety. Life in the pre-scientific age was ruled by accident, which was explained as destiny.
Science, however, has greatly relieved human sufferings; especially this is so in the case of medicine, and surgery. In ancient times a leper was left outside the city walls to live as long as he could on charity and then to die. We read that in the great plague of London (1665) people left their plague-stricken relatives to die and ran way to save their own lives.
Only the other day the Bubonic plague, smallpox and cholera would break out almost every year. The operation of patients was so painful that more victims died on the table. But now-a-days most diseases yield to treatment; and many more are prevented or checked by vaccination, injections of many kinds as also by micro-surgery and ultra-sonic treatment and transplantation of limbs or organs. Science has greatly relieved men of the fear of disease and untimed death. The death rate has decreased; the average life expectation has increased.
Apart from fighting diseases, science has made life much more comfortable with various amenities. Imagine the sufferings of our ancestors who had to walk for days in sun and rain over dusty or muddy roads to reach a distant place. But nowadays we can go to the end of the earth by jumbo jet, incredibly faster. Traveling has become a pleasure whether by land, sea, or air. The ordinary day-to-day business of living has become much more smooth and easy. We need no longer cover in the dark at night nor do we sweat in the heat as our ancestors did. We have air-conditioners. Power-driven vehicles have also eased the physical hardship of transport.
Life is for the people in the Western countries more comfortable than it is for us. Just imagine an average home in America. There are so many labour-saving devices to give the tired housewife more leisure. She can have an electric oven, an electric washer, an electric cleaner. She can finish her cooking in half-an-hour; her washing takes far less time as if she is getting things done by robots.
To the man in offices and factories also, science offers all sorts of pleasant amenities. If it is too cold, the office-room is kept comparatively warm by heaters. If it is too hot, it is air-conditioned. In the factories, all heavy and unpleasant work is done by machinery. Conditions in mines once used to be like hell; now the suffering of the workers have been much reduced and mitigated.
Science has become a handmaiden of culture. Book-production, that used to be a costly process in the last century, is now cheap and plentiful. The student enjoys facilities for writing and reading in a comfortable library, or for doing experiments in the laboratory, which his forefathers could not dream of. The lecturer is aided by apparatus and the microphone. Both the acquisition and spread of culture have become easier.
Science can also help relieve the pangs of hunger. During days of unscientific agriculture, man was at the mercy of the weather. In one year, there may be heavy rains; in the another, there may be severe drought.
Today science has helped man conquer Nature. Scientific irrigation brings to the cultivator a ready supply of water: mechanized implements like the bulldozer and tractor help him to plough large tracts of land quickly and efficiently. Greater knowledge of soil chemistry has ensured proper use of manures and fertilizers. Refrigeration has helped long-term storage of food and its even distribution throughout the year. There is possibility of a plenty, which our forefathers could not dream of.
Of course, it is a fact that today the privileges of science belong to the rich. It is they who reap most of the advantages of science. But science is also changing man’s outlook on life, and as days go by, its benefits will be more and more enjoyed by the common man and reach the household of the poor. Science has removed many of the disabilities from which men suffered. Use of scientific methods has made the handicapped active. It will relieve much more in the years to come. Man will soon become “the master of things”.
Science has completely changed the pattern of man’s life. Our life today is radically different from forefathers. Even a few hundred years ago man was largely at the mercy of nature. Whenever there was a calamity, the only consolation lay in the message contained in the proverb, “What cannot be cured must be endured”. But science has enhanced man’s power over nature and so he has gained confidence in himself.
Science has made life comfortable. We do not cover long distances on foot to meet our relatives. We can now easily go to any place we like. Travelling, whether by land, sea or air is now very comfortable. Similarly, we do not have to depend on a candle or an oil-lamp to remove the darkness at night. Electricity now works wonders for us.
In fact, science has provided us with so many amenities of life.
Science has made human life immensely better than what it was in the past. Science has revolutionaries’ agriculture and now it is possible for us to grow more food it has also enabled us to dress ourselves in a much better manner than our forefathers. Our houses, towns and villages are also now much better places to live in. In fact all the basic requirements of life are now easily fulfilled by utilism scientific knowledge.
Science has prolonged the span of life. It has reduced infant mortality. It has also enabled us to fight diseases. The physicians and the surgeons are now in an advantageous position in the matter of diagnosis of diseases and their treatment. Moreover, due to the use of anesthetics we are now largely free from the fear of pain. Thus science plays a great role both in health and in sickness.
Science has enabled us to do a lot of work in a short time and with very little physical strain. We have invented a number of machines to do various unpleasant and difficult jobs for us. Science has really freed us from the drudgery of manual work. Science has provided us with the means for cheap entertainment. The gramophone, the radio, the tape- recorder, the television, and the cinema have made our life pleasant.
Science has brought the different nations close to one another. This has resulted in the promotion of under standing and the establishment of fraternal relationship. Science has made us truly civilised.
The contribution of science to the cause of human welfare has been very great and it can reasonably be hoped that with the advancement of science man will feel that he is the master of things in the universe.
Technology is evolving and scientists are frequently developing new concepts and theories, improving our life style and making the world ultimately a better place to live in. Science has led to many extraordinary inventions, filling our human mind with vast amount of knowledge and intelligence. For example, many types of new planets have been discovered recently. Although people have been living in the world for a very long time, it is quite recent that these planets have been discovered using telescope and other mechanisms. These newly found planets are identical to earth and believed to be supporting life, which I have found interesting. However, without the contributions of technology, it would have never been possible. Moreover
For example, Malaysia was not a very wealthy country economically but the improvements of technology have helped their financial system in a quite extensive level. In the past, they were not stable in a financial system until the effects of complex machinery and the contributions of modern technology have rationalized their economy. In the essay, The Enchanted Forest, Bill Reid, the author, also supports this point by saying, “We all carried ashore with us the knowledge that the wave of technological assault that had begun on the other island and changed most of the continent”(Reid 319).Basically, Bill states that how technology has changed most of North America several ways. In addition, this quote is related to the essay because it illustrates how impotent science and technology is, in terms of rationalizing our economy. In view of these aspects, I would say most people would agree that it has indeed made our world a better place.
Most importantly, the contributions of science and technology have made our lives more delightful. In our everyday life, we use many ordinary things, which have been modified through improvements. These simple inventions have modernized the way we do things given that most people are generally depended upon them. For example, a cell phone is considered as an important item due the service it provides. In the past, when cell phone was not invented, people had to go all the way to the person’s place in order to deliver whatever they want to deliver.
